Your Job ≠ Your Calling

Have you ever wanted to shake off some of your expanding leadership responsibilities with, “But that’s not part of my job!”? Yes?

But what if you’re looking at the wrong thing? What if this isn’t even about your ‘job’? What if the Lord is trying to expand your calling?

It’s easy to allow your job description, or what you are paid to do, to shape your vision and calling.  But, fellow leader, you are more than your current job title. Your current job is only one aspect of your broader calling.

A job always carries a title; a calling rarely does. A job title implies boundaries; a calling knows no bounds.

Are you ‘The Pastor” or are you called to pastor people? If you only see yourself as ‘The Pastor’ you will be limited in location and role. But if you are called to pastor people, your calling has neither geographical nor role boundaries.

Bishop TD Jakes is a classic example of moving beyond a job to embrace an expanding calling. He has stepped out beyond the traditional role of pastor in a local church to entrepreneur, talk show host, producer and author. In his own words, he is called to communicate and this calling continues to expand.

Don’t allow your job title or what you are paid to do limit the scope of your influence and impact.

Whether you are called to pastor or to communicate or to show mercy or… whatever it is, until you step beyond your job into your calling, you will never know your full capacity. Nor will the people you lead.

Maybe your calling needs to be expanded beyond one primary industry. Historically we have encouraged a single career culture, but I think this means some great people are under achieving their potential.

Successful parallel careers become a possibility when you focus on expanding your calling.

Take the Apostle Paul for example: he led an incredible ministry but also ran his tent making business on the side. Or my friend, John, who owns a large transportation business. Compelled by the spiritual poverty in his home town, John and his wife decided to plant and pastor a church – at the same time as they began expanding their business into shipping. Today both the church and the business are thriving!

I don’t believe God is the slightest bit interested in your job title. But He is very interested in your calling.

And I believe He is looking for leaders who combine focus with flexibility. “Submit your plans to the Lord…” (Prov 16:3) presumes planning and focus. “Your will be done…” (Mt 6:10) requires flexibility and an open mind for what He wants to do in and through us.

Take a moment to ask yourself:

  • Who is missing out because of my refusal (or delay) to step beyond my job into my calling?
  • What business or ministry opportunities am I potentially missing out on?

Your calling is not just about you, it’s about the vision God has given you, about the people God has called you to serve. When God called Moses, it wasn’t about Moses. Rather, it was in response to the cries of His people.

Don’t delay. Embrace your calling. For His sake. For others’ sake. Allow God to lead you and expand your calling. In eternity you will be so glad you did.

Insights from #GLS | 4 Workouts to Grow Your Risk Muscle

Just being a leader with a vision is not enough. When the spirit of risk-taking is removed from a leader, you make the leader ineffective and very quickly move from pioneering to maintaining.

In a society and culture where safety and security are important, the word risk has little favor. Many clever marketing campaigns have been designed to generate fear or concern, creating a natural urge in us to stay away from risk. Just think of all the insurance products we have! The idea of risk has been unnecessarily packed with many negative implications.

Yet a leader needs to see risk as a friend to embrace not an enemy to fear.

If you’re feeling stalled, stuck in maintenance mode, consider your good friend, risk. Maybe you need to get re-acquainted?

Here are four workouts that will grow your risk muscle.

Leadership Lessons from Moses #6

From Numbers 11, this is the sixth of 6 key lessons we can learn from Moses’ attitude towards his problems and how God used his problems to increase His Leadership capacity.

Leadership Lesson 6: Realise all that God has put inside of you

Moses did not realise, what was in him was greater than what was coming on him! (Vs 16 & 17)

Moses felt he did not have any more fuel left in him to fight another battle.

God tells Moses to bring 70 men and I will come and take the spirit that I have already put inside of you and I will put it on them Vs 17.  God did not bring anything from heaven – it was already inside Moses!  Before the foundations of the earth God knew you and had a plan and purpose for you; He has deposited all that you need to fulfil His plan – it is already inside of you – it may be dormant but it is there!  God is trying to bring those dormant abilities, gifts, talents, calling, vision, and potential out through the pain that you are going through – like childbirth!

God is good and He will bring good out of everything because you love Him.

Moses had 70 times greater capacity than he thought he had.  One minute he was ready to die, the next minute 70 others are raised up to leadership through his spirit!

70 leaders are born through the pain that Moses went through! How many are inside you?!  Don’t die with them!  If Moses had died two verses earlier as he wanted, those 70 would have never come…  What is in you is greater than what is coming on you!

Moses wanted to and asked God to kill him, imagine what would have happened if God had answered his prayer? There are good reasons why the Lord does not answer all your prayers!

Don’t go to your grave before birthing all that God has put inside of you.

–        Do you know what God has put inside of you?
–        What do you need to do next to see the breakthrough?
